Our Story

Since 1957, Wolverine Coach in Mattawan, Michigan, has been proudly serving the community as a small, family-owned business with a rich history and deep roots. Our journey began with a simple yet innovative idea: converting old hearses into animal control units. This unique endeavor was the vision of our founder, Harold Brininger, who built the company on creativity, dedication, and service.

When Harold passed unexpectedly, his son Jack was called back from the war due to the passing and he stepped in to ensure the family business would thrive. Picking up where his father left off, Jack expanded the company’s offerings, designing animal control units for pickup trucks and venturing into new territory. Over time, Wolverine Coach grew to include not only animal control units/dog boxes but also truck caps, vehicle accessories, and many other one-off items, solidifying our reputation for quality and versatility.

Today, Wolverine Coach remains a cornerstone of Mattawan, with Jack—when he’s not enjoying his well-earned "retirement" in Florida—working alongside his son Greg and grandson Jake. Together, three generations of the Brininger family uphold the values that have guided Wolverine Coach for more than six decades: innovation, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to our customers.

An area of innovation that we continue to grow in is our special project work. Greg had the chance to create HopCat's Airstream bar that can be seen at their downtown Kalamazoo location. We also built The Donut Depot that you'll find selling delicious donuts and cider on Schultz Farm during the fall.

Most recently, Jake has taken the initiative to bring Wolverine Coach into the modern age by updating the company logo, revamping the website, and maintaining the company's social media pages. His efforts ensure that our family business continues to connect with customers in new and meaningful ways.

Whether you’re outfitting your vehicle with one of our durable truck caps, tonneau covers, seeking expert guidance on accessories, or looking for other assistance, you’re not just a customer—you are part of the Wolverine Coach family. We’re proud of where we’ve come from, and we look forward to continuing to serve our community for many years to come.
